VA Historic Property Highlights - Beaufort Gates
The 1940 fence and gates at Beaufort National Cemetery in Beaufort, South Carolina fulfilled the requirement to have a fence enclose all national cemeteries. An Act to Establish and Protect National Cemeteries in 1867 directed the Secretary of War to enclose every national cemetery with a fence and mark each grave with a headstone. More substantial walls and gates, like the one at Beaufort National Cemetery, replaced many of the original stone walls. return to VA Historic Property Highlights |
